Senate condemns violence against women, girl-child

Senators on Thursday strongly condemned all forms of violence against women and girls, emphasizing the need for more robust measures to safeguard their interests.

This position was articulated during a plenary session in Abuja, where the Senators actively participated in the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence on Women and the Girl-Child.”

Adorning orange sashes as a symbol of solidarity for the advocacy, the lawmakers, including the President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, united in their commitment to address this critical issue.

In a poignant gesture, the Senators observed a minute’s silence to honor the memory of all women and individuals who lost their lives due to violence.

A motion to observe the advocacy was led by seventeen Senators, spearheaded by Sen. Ireti Kingibe (FCT, Labour Party). Notable figures such as Sen. Adams Oshiomhole, Sen. Natasha Akpoti, and Sen. Abdul Ningi voiced their support for the motion. They also acknowledged the virtues and sacrifices made by women globally, with a specific emphasis on those in Nigeria.

Summing up the debate before the motion was passed, Sen. Godswill Akpabio declared, “We are all in agreement that violence against women and the girl-child must be unequivocally condemned.”
