Senate 2019: PDP agog as Ekwunife set to flag party ticket for Anambra central

CELEBRATION can best describe the mood in the Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the return of Senator Uche Ekwunife to the party.

Ekwunife was a candidate of the party in the last 2015 general election which she won before the election tribunals declared her victory null and void in favour of Senator Victor Umeh who is currently serving the central senatorial district of Anambra State.

She later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) where she contested for the Anambra Central Senatorial District ticket of the party and won.

But some aspirants in the APC went to court challenging the conduct of the primary election of the party and in response to their petitions to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the electoral body was said to have declared that there was no primary election in the Senatorial District.

Meanwhile, the candidate of PDP for Anambra Central District, Chief Charles Odukwe, last two weeks announced that he is no longer interested in contesting the election and one Chief Emelie Okika was alleged to have been given the party ticket until the return of Ekwunife.

Confirming the return of Ekwunife the state secretary PDP elections Committee, Chief Ugochukwu Okeke, said that”there are very strong indications that Ekwunife has joined our party the PDP and I can tell you the ongoing authority that she has already been welcomed back into our family.

“Our party is open to anybody and we do not chase people away from the party. You know she was our member and she won the last election under our party.

“Party members are happy to welcome her back to the party. But on the issue of her flying the flag of the party, I am not in the position to say that. The party would decide on that. Be also informed that the party position is supreme and the party nominates the candidate that would contest elections for it.”

Efforts to speak with Sen Ekwunife failed as she was said to be in a closed-door meeting with the state stakeholders led by the state chairman of the party, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu.
