Security chiefs disobeying Buhari —Zamfara gov

GOVERNOR Abdul Aziz Yari of Zamfara State has lamented that several days after President Muhammadu Buhari directed the deployment of more security personnel to Zamfara State, not a single one has reported to the state.

The governor made the disclosure, on Friday, during a stakeholders meeting on the worsening security situation in the state, held at the Government House, Gusau.

Yari, who is the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), lamented that 38 people were killed in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of the state in an attack which, he said, happened nine days after the president ordered the deployment of more security personnel in the state.

“Not a single additional security man has reported to the state following the presidential order and so the bandits have continued to unleash terror on innocent citizens of the state,” he said.

He said the NGF would write the National Assembly to remove the label given to state governors as the “chief security officers” of their states.

The governor said there was no for calling governors chief security officers of their states since they had no control over the security agents in their respective states.

“No governor has the right or power to discipline, recruit or dismiss any security officer posted to his state, no matter the offence or otherwise of the security agents, despite the fact that the constitution says we are the chief security officers of our states,” he said.

He said the National Assembly would soon be asked for the removal of the “chief security officers” label.

Yari said for now, he would like a situation where he would be addressed only as governor – without adding the label “chief security officer.”

He urged political officeholders, traditional rulers, religious and community leaders to bring their people together and work out ways of ending the security challenges in the state.
