Secondary school students on rampage over colleague’s death in Abeokuta

Published by

Pandemonium broke out on Monday at Saje area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when students of Baptist Boys’ High School (BBHS) allegedly invaded the premises of Ilugun High School, also within the area, to avenge the death of two of their students.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the two victims (names withheld) were stabbed to death during an unofficial inter-school gambling competition, reported to have been held the previous week.

An eyewitness informed the Nigerian Tribune that the rampaging students of BBHS were armed with dangerous weapons which made students and the management staff of Ilugun High School scamper for safety.

The fracas it was learnt also forced shop owners and other business operators to abandon their wares while commercial drivers deserted the area while the fight lasted.

A shop owner in the area who returned to her shop after security operatives had restored normalcy informed that two students of BBHS were stabbed to death with broken bottles during the gambling game.

“One of the BBHS students stabbed died last Friday, while the second one died on Sunday. But the students of BBHS were not happy about the incident and that was why they came out in violent protest against students of Ilugun High School today,” the source said.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident, adding that the command had drafted security operatives to the scene to quell the situation.
