A private school in Osogbo, Kunike International School, Osun State, on Tuesday embarked on the repair of a two-kilometre portion of the Osogbo-Ilesa Road, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported.
Students of the school were seen in the early hours of Tuesday with different construction equipment and gravel, filling potholes and bad portions on the road.
The school’s Proprietress, Mrs Olanike Olakunle, told NAN that the repair work was part of its corporate social responsibility to the community.
Olakunle said the work was also a strategic way of instilling community service in the students, to inculcate in them the traits of patriotism and responsible citizenry.
According to her, the school has a standing philosophy of building future leaders through the culture of selflessness and hard work.
“Kunike is not just another school out there, but it is a peculiar school, raising peculiar treasures that will emerge as global leaders.
“The students are being trained to become servant leaders through community service; they are also being trained to give back to the communities where they belong.
“We are making them to become conscious of the fact that citizens have a major role to play in nation-building outside the government,’’ the proprietress said.
She disclosed that the school was also teaching the children the tenets of economic diversification by getting them involved in practical farming.
The school, Olakunle said, had acquired about six hectares of land to be used by the students for farming.
“This is another effort to make the students understand that farming is a potential economic hub for the country and not a profession for the poor and uneducated members of the society,’’ she stressed.
