School Feeding Programme: FG enumerates Abia primary schools

The Federal Government, on Tuesday embarked on the enumeration of primary 1 – 3 pupils, as well as its food vendors in Abia State for the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme.

Speaking after the enumeration at Ahiaeke Community Primary School, Ndume and Ugba Community Primary School, Nkata, all in Ibeku in Umuahia North LGA, the Team Lead of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Florence Ngozi Chukwude, said the essence of the enumeration was to give face, verify and get data bank for the program in the state.

Mrs Chukwude said the population of the children in the state is about 1,030 pupils, while the ministry would be back in September to update the data by capturing fresh pupils in the public schools in the state.

She pointed out that the September capturing “will grow better accountability and transparency” for the programme in the state.”

In their separate speeches, the coordinator of the programme in the state, Elder Gabriel Ahuruonye and Umuahia North Education Secretary, Hon. Clement Onyeoziri, commended the Federal Government over the programme, urging the Federal Government to increase the funding of the program.

Also speaking, the Head Teacher, Ahiaeke Community Primary School, Ndume Mrs Ezioma Nelly Nwachukwu, and her assistant, Princess Henrietta Uzoamaka Chukwuma, confirmed that the program had actually improved school enrollment into primary schools in the state.

The staff of the National Bureau of Statistics, Mr Nduaguibe, Isaac and staff of the National Population Commission, Mr Oriaku Samuel were on the ground to witness the exercise.

The National Home Grown School Feeding Program is one of the arms Nigeria Social Investment Program, after M-Power and Conditional Cash Disbursement, CCD established by the Federal Government in 2016, and aimed at cushioning the effect of poverty on the part of pupils in the public schools in the country.
