From right, President, Sickle Cell Hope Alive Foundation (SCHAF), Professor Adeyinka Falusi, Dr Yinka Kotila, Mr Abayomi Odetunde, Director of operation of the foundation and others at the free genotype test organised for selected community members held at UCH, Ibadan, recently.
The Sickle Cell Hope Alive Foundation(SCHAF), a non-profit/governmental health foundation established to facilitate care for people living with sickle cell disease in Nigeria is seeking collaborations with local and international corporate organisations, as well as philanthropic individuals in the country in its supportive activities towards reducing the burden of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) victims in the country.
The President of the foundation, Professor Adeyinka Falusi made the plead recently at a separate programme held in Ibadan to empower people living with Sickle Cell Disease in Oyo State with the intent to augment the expensive financial expenses they often incurred on their ill health issues periodically.
Also, the foundation extended its philanthropic gesture to not less than 75 people drawn from a designated community in Oyo State by running a free Point of Care Genotype Test, (POC T) to familiarize themselves with their genotype group status. The exercise cost the foundation not less than N2,500 per heard.
Speaking on the occasion, held at UCH Open Quadrangle, Professor Falusi lamented the increase of people living with Sickle Cell Disease in Nigeria. According to her, not less than 150,000 children are born with Sickle Cell Disease and over 100,000 die annually.
She said: “ This situation informed the establishment of the foundation to invest in the lives of these people living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Nigeria. it is also of necessity to prevent further occurrence of this disease through an awareness campaign of knowing your blood genotype to our youths in the country.
“The inexpressible ill-health conditions of SCD patients should inspire the society to support their healthcare both in cash and in kind. SCD is avoidable if corporate bodies, philanthropic individuals in the society would join SCHAF to fight and support the victims in our society, the development would go a long way to eradicate the disease and reduce the burdens of the victims in the country.
“In this regard, it has become expedient for every institution of learning in the country from secondary school level to introduce ‘ Know Your Blood Genotype’ education into the school curriculum with the establishment of a functional Club known as Know Your Genotype ( KYG) to be made compulsory for every student to spread the good news on the campus. SCHAF is available for every institution in the country for guidance and supervision of the proposed club.
Moreover, it will not be out of place to include candidates’ Genotype status as part of admission requirements into our tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The development would go a long way to encourage our youths to go for genotype test.
“SCHAF comprises of people of integrity and experienced medical personnel come together with a vision to educate and empower SCD patients and to minimize its occurrence in our society. We welcome corporate companies in the industrial sector, philanthropic individuals from all walks of life as members of the foundation. We need supports from the government circle to boost SCHAF activities in-country. It is high time a special fund / is raised both by government and corporate body for SCD patients’ healthcare.”
