Scavenger bags one-year in prison for stealing cooking pots

Published by

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo has sentenced a 38-year-old man, Saheed Adisa, to one year of imprisonment for stealing cooking pots.

Despite pleading not guilty to the charge, Magistrate Mrs V.B. Williams found Adisa guilty as charged, noting that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Adisa, who resides at No. 25 Yemidire Street in the Sabo area of Abeokuta, was charged with a single count of stealing.

The magistrate sentenced him to one year in prison without the option of a fine, specifying that the sentences for the charges would run concurrently.

The prosecutor, Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, informed the court that Adisa, a scavenger, committed the offence on May 30 at around 4:30 pm in the Adigbe area of Abeokuta.

Adisa had entered the compound of Mr Shakirudeen Durowoju through a window and stolen aluminium pots valued at N35,000.

He also entered the home of Mr Femi Adesoji and stole a cooking pot worth N10,000.

Durowoju caught Adisa after noticing him in the compound and, upon searching the sack Adisa was carrying, found the stolen pots.

Adisa later confessed to stealing pots from various houses.

The offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun 2006.
