Samuel Omidiji: Leading the way in digital art and creative technologies

Commencing his journey as a 14-year-old apprentice in a printing shop, Samuel’s rise has been extraordinary, fueled by an unyielding passion for graphic design and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Speaking about how he didn’t allow financial constraints to affect his dream of contributing to the world through his creativity, he said he never allowed anything to hinder his access to personal computers, adding that “My early exposure to design sparked a curiosity that became the driving force behind my transformative journey.”

While studying Agricultural Engineering at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Samuel honed his graphic design skills, earning recognition as the Most Creative in his department and a fellowship in 2016.

After graduating from college and gaining recognition on campus, Samuel sought opportunities to launch his design career on a broader, more professional stage. In 2017, he entered the Educate Lagos Logo Contest and emerged victorious. Reflecting on his win and the subsequent success it brought, Samuel had this to say:

“I think the turning point arrived in 2017 when I triumphed in the Educate Lagos Logo contest. This propelled me into the spotlight and laid the foundation for a career that would leave an indelible mark on Nigeria’s creative landscape.”

Embarking on the professional stage, Samuel thrived at acclaimed agencies. At Noah’s Ark Communications, he contributed to global recognition, securing accolades like the Number 1 Agency in West Africa at the Lories Awards and a historic gold win at the Epica Awards. Crafting campaigns for prestigious clients showcased his ability to deliver unmatched creative solutions.

Samuel’s creative prowess has left a lasting impact on prominent Nigerian brands, including telecommunications giants like MTN Nigeria and Airtel, as well as leading banks such as First Bank of Nigeria and Stanbic IBTC, among others. His expertise in shaping digital strategies for industry leaders has cemented his reputation as a digital visionary.

Taking a captivating turn in his artistic journey, Samuel delved into Afrofuturistic digital art, blending abstract concepts, science fiction, and African culture. Through this genre, he creates a visual landscape that intertwines technology and heritage, offering bold expressions of a future deeply rooted in the aesthetics of the African diaspora.

Driven by a passion to be not only the best but also at the forefront of creativity and technology, Samuel pursued a Master’s degree that will equip him with up-to-date skills and knowledge in the digital landscape. He underscored his motivation with:

Samuel bagged a master’s degree from Illinois State University in Creative Technologies, specialising in immersive art and technology, a testament to his dedication to staying at the forefront of media art and technology.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Samuel seized the opportunity to intern at Expedia Group, one of the world’s largest travel companies. His stellar performance earned him a full-time role, which he is set to embark on in August 2023.
