Rural engagement: Strategy towards integrating rural dwellers into governance cycle ― Oyetola

Osun State governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola has stated that rural community engagement is another governance strategy of his administration which is in tandem with his conviction that the rural dwellers are critical stakeholders whose needs and yearnings should be represented in the policy formulation process.

The governor disclosed this through his Special Adviser on Civic Engagement, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye during an engagement visit to some rural communities in the Olaoluwa Local Government Area of the state.

Oyetola noted that the outreach was hinged on the quest of the present administration to engender inclusive and participatory governance where no strata of the society including rural dwellers will not be left out in the policy formulation process.

He further emphasised that the best policy framework which every result-oriented government can come up with is the one that emanates from the bottom-up approach system where the very last man of the society could have input.

“The current administration is not oblivious of the remoteness of the rural dwellers from the centre which has caused an obvious disconnect over time, but the ongoing engagement drive is an effort to bridge the gap and make their interests represented in the policy formulation process,” he said.

Oyetola however said his administration would continue to place a premium on the opinions and tenets of rural dwellers in the state governance.

In their remarks, the members of the communities visited could not hide their joy as they appreciated the governor for identifying with them, saying this kind of engagement coming to their doorsteps is the first of its kind in the history of the state.

Oba Ismail Gbadamosi, the Ola of Ajagunlase community who spoke during the tour, commended the governor for his social interventions in the area such as rehabilitation of roads, construction of health centre as well as his good education policy which have positively impacted the lives of the pupils.

The monarch however, on behalf of other communities urged the government to consider them for more value-added benefits in terms of potable water, stable power supply, accessible road networks among others which would make life more abundant for them.
