The determination to positively position Nigeria among the comity of nations, as well as building a robust platform to harmonise and harness the beauty, strength and pride of African rich potentialities through right narratives, the Director General, National Council of Arts and Culture (NCAC), Chief Segun Runsewe, recently at the 2019 edition of the Accra Weizo in Ghana, launched the Nigeria and Ghana Friendship Club to foster more business and socio-cultural ties among each other.
The NCAC boss who also doubled as the President of the World Craft Council, Africa Region disclosed this in Accra, Ghana where he was honoured as the Culture and Tourism Man of the Year by the Balafon Award at the Accra Weizo, held at La Palm Beach Resort.
According to Runsewe “Nigeria and Ghana have a long standing diplomatic relationship dating back to several decades, and as the two largest economies in West Africa, the relationship between the duo has not only been robust, but also mutually rewarding, with evidence of strategic political, cultural, commercial and educational ties maintained for a very long time.
“Nigeria and Ghana have been in the forefront of the campaign for the unit, peace, cooperation and mutual understanding among countries, particularly in West Africa Sub-region and the continent of Africa in general.
“The shared vision and aspiration of the two countries in providing responsible leadership for West Africa nations formed the pivot for the Nigeria-Ghana Friendship Club. The club will bring together Nigerians and Ghanaians citizens of like minds to fraternize and chart a course for the consolidation of the already existing cordial relationship between the two countries.
”As brothers and neighbours, there is a lot Nigeria and Ghana stand to gain by evolving informal platforms of collaborations and strengthened sub-regional solidarity.
Citizens of the two countries must begin to look at themselves as truly bothers who must work together to develop not only themselves, but also chart a good course for West Africa to champion the course of unity, peace, stability and development of the sub-region.
Earlier in his goodwill message, the Director-General of NCAC, Chief Runsewe, congratulated the publisher of Africa Travel Quarterly (ATQ), Mr Ikechi Uko, on the success of hosting the fifth edition of Accra Weizo, which he attributed to the accomplishment of the Akwaaba African Travel Market (AfTM), a tourism, culture and travel business promotion in West Africa.
“When the history of the development of this sector shall be told, the name of the publisher of ATQ, Mr Ikechi Uko shall surely be written in gold.
“I am deeply overwhelmed by the honour, recognising my humble contribution to the development of culture, tourism and travel business in Nigeria, the African region and the world at large.
“I, therefore, assure the management and board of ATQ that this award will further propel me to even higher level of commitment in our sub-regional and regional economy.
“As I have always emphasised, the key to the development of Africa economy lies in the culture, tourism and travel sector. As the President of the World Crafts Council, African Region, it is my determination to mobilise and sensitise key players in the sector in Africa towards optimizing the vast potential in this sector.
“We are here in Ghana; we have also visited Botswana, Burkina Faso, and South Africa among other countries, propagating the gospel of culture, tourism and travel industry as a key sector job creation, employment generation and driver of the GDP of African nations. “
