We have run out of patience in Niger Delta, no more rhetoric —IYC

Published by
Comrade Eric Omare

Factional President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Worldwide, Comrade Eric Omare, has said the people of the Niger Delta have run out of patience over unfulfilled promises made by the federal government; noting that rhetoric must end as “we have reached elastic limit” over these endless promises to develop the oil rich region.

He picked hole in the several failed meeting, and the proposed meeting on behalf of the federal government by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs during a meeting tagged 2nd Regular Meeting of the National Council on Niger Delta in Akure, Ondo State, stressing that futile meetings must end for lasting peace to reign.

The meeting, which is slated for 7th to 14th of September, 2017, is expected to chart the way out for relative peace in the Niger Delta region.

Omare, a lawyer, reiterated that several meeting with leaders in the region had failed, “enough is enough, and the federal government should begin to implement resolutions to show their sincerity, if any towards the betterment of the region” ,he said.

He recalled that at the height of the renewed militancy, the leaders and stakeholders of the region intervened and the militants declared ceasefire with promise on the part of the federal government to address some short term needs of the region.

Omare said that among the several resolutions was the immediate commencement of academic activities at the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State, which the federal government had failed to implement since the truce was reached.

Continuing, he submitted that the local refiners in the region were yet to be economically enabled, through the approved modular refinery plan of the federal government.

Others are the immediate relocation of the corporate headquarters of oil companies to the Niger Delta, a promise made by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, on behalf of the federal government during his tour of the region.

The IYC President regretted that the federal government was yet to march words with action.

According to him, whereas academic activities are supposed to commence at the maritime university in September 2017 academic session, nothing concrete has been done towards commencement of academic activities.

“The federal government has failed to release fund for the purpose of recruitment of academic and non-academic staff, admission of students and other steps towards commencement of academic activities.

“In the same vein, there is no step towards the relocation of the corporate headquarters of multinationals to the Niger Delta region, establishment of modular refineries and economic empowerment of local people involved in local refinery in the Niger Delta region”. he lamented.
