Rumpus in INEC over REC’s send-off party •There’s nothing of such —Admin Sec

MANAGEMENT of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), have been accused of coercing its staff to make financial contributions for the send-off of the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Olusegun Agbaje.

A staff of the commission disclosed this on Saturday, claiming that the planning committee for the event had tentatively recommended certain amount to be paid by staff from Levels 07-13, Heads of Department (HODs) and Electoral Officers (EOs) in the state.

However, Ondo INEC Administrative Secretary, Alhaji Kabiru Omosanya, debunked the allegation, saying there was nothing of such in the offing.

While acknowledging that it was true that a committee had been set up to arrange the programme for the outgoing Ondo REC, he added that there was no meeting yet on the send-off.

However, the INEC source, who spoke with Sunday Tribune, strictly on anonymity, insisted that the staff were being coerced to pay the money to send-off Mr Agbaje.

The source also added that there was a secret memo to the effect.

“I can tell you that while the REC himself is not aware of the development, the planning committee for the send-off has tentatively recommended as follows:

“HODs/EOs are to pay N55,000 each; HOUs/AEOs I to pay N20,000 each; staff on GL 08-13 to pay N7, 500 each. All officers on GL 07 are to pay N3,500 each.

“We are being coerced to pay for REC’s send-off without our consent. Many of our colleagues aren’t happy, but it seems we are hopeless. I am very sure the REC didn’t send them, but that is their normal way of exploiting us in Ondo State,” he said.

In a telephone interview with Sunday Tribune, Alhaji Omosanya said: “As we speak, the REC is yet to know of any plan to host him. Send-off for the REC is a management affair and it is usually held by those who felt the REC must have made some meaningful impact in their lives.

“It is not even possible to make any forceful deductions from the salary of staff because Abuja (INEC Head Office) will know if there is any variation in salary at any point in time,” he said.
