As part of its humanitarian and vocational services, Rotary Club Ibadan Jericho Metro, on Monday, commissioned the vocational building of the correctional centre at Agodi Gate, Ibadan.
Speaking to Tribune Online, president of the Club, Mr Seyi Alaba, said they chose the correctional centre because people in the society tend to forget inmates but they thought of building their capacities.
He said: “We thought of what we can do as a Club to affect the lives of people here and by the time they are leaving here, they will be better persons in the society.
“Also, in Rotary Club we have a Directorate of Vocational Services whereby we train people in skills acquisition and during our visit to this place, we saw that this place was not conducive enough.
“Like the little thing we have done here, if they come here to work, that will motivate them and improve their psyche to do whatever they want to learn. If they leave this place after their terms, they will be able to integrate well in society.
“When we came in, this place was really not conducive for training, we had to plaster both in and out, we fixed the ceiling and we had to do the lighting with burglary before we did the general painting so that this place will be conducive.
“The second task was to provide the machinery and equipment that the people here are using, so we have identified four departments here and in a very short time, we are going to hand over the equipment to them so that they can use it to train themselves.”
In his reaction, the Deputy Controller Operation (DCC), Nigeria Correctional Service, Oyo State Command, Mr Ola Bolaji, thanked the group for their support and promised to utilise the facility positively.
He said: “They have given us their promise that apart from what they have done here, they will still come with some equipment; we cannot thank them enough, it is only God that will reward their kind gesture.”
In his remark, former International vice president, Rotary International, Yinka Babalola said for 60 years, Rotary has supported Ibadan and they have close to 22 clubs in the city alone.
