Rotaract educates Lagos students on menstrual hygiene, donates sanitary pads

The Rotaract Club District 9110 on Thursday, donated sanitary pads to students of public Senior Secondary School in Lagos.

The International Service project, themed; Pad for Dignity’, was organised in partnership with Medplus, Rotaract District 9104, Rotaract Africa and Millennium Fellowship to enlighten female students of Wahab Folawiyo Senior Comprehensive High School, Osborne Complex, Ikoyi, Lagos on menstrual hygiene.

The students numbering about 500 were also tutored on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle during and after menstruation without avoiding or missing classes while some of the facilitators shared their menstrual experiences.

According to the Club International Service Director for District 9110,  Princewill Onyekah, over 40 per cent of women and girls in the country cannot afford sanitary pads for their menstrual cycle.

He said, “We organise a health talk around menstrual health and hygiene. We are giving out 500 menstrual pads to SS 1 to SS3 students. We have had sessions with doctors and also had a speaker from Medplus pharmacy who shared their experiences with the students.

Advice was also given to the students on how to handle menstrual cramps and pains. “We thought about how we can dignify our girls during their monthly cycle. And that gives birth to the theme of the project, pad with dignity.”

One of the resource persons, Dr Rachael Reninwa took the students on keeping records and managing pains and cramps during their menstrual cycle.

She said, “I have an assignment for you. If you don’t have an App, try and get a calendar to keep record of your menstrual cycle. It is very important. You must try as much as possible to avoid junk. This is necessary to avoid menstrual pains and cramps. If you eat a lot of soft drinks and sugary substances, you will have more pain.

“You must drink a lot of water. Another way to manage pain during menstrual cycle is to engage in exercise. Whenever you feel that pain, just take a walk. There is also something we call hot water bag. It helps too. You can also take paracetamol, it helps.

“Let me ask this, how many pads do you use in a day for a regular menstrual flow? You are expected to use three pads to engage in proper hygiene. Your pad must not stay under for more than eight hours. We know pads are very expensive in this economy but after eight hours, it is important to change your pad. Do not use soap to wash your V-region. Doing this kills your body’s protective mechanism.”

Co-sponsor of the project, Medplus pharmacy, represented at the event by the company’s Business Development Manager, Adeoye Oyerinde, said; “We are happy to join Rotaract Club to extend sanitary dignity to the girls. This is one of our CSR we engage in. We are happy to be a part of this inspiring story and engagement with these young ladies. We want to tell them about sanitary hygiene and let them know that they should be proud of being females.

“Sometimes it feels a bit awkward for girls to say they are having their menstrual flow and excuse themselves. You see girls using tissues and sometimes papers during their menstrual cycle.

“Many of them cannot afford sanitary pads. We know that it’s a monthly visitor God has done, they can do it with dignity and with their heads high and be proud of themselves.”

The principal of the school, who was represented by one of the teachers at the program, hailed the club for its commitment to the girls’ dignity and menstrual hygiene.
