THERE was pandemonium in Enugu, on Tuesday, as a gang of youths suspected to be robbers stormed a new generation bank, carting away an undisclosed sum of money from a customer of the financial institution.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim was coming out of the banking hall when the robbers blocked him, snatched the money he withdrew, as well as his car keys and drove off in his car.
The robbers were said to have fired sporadically into the air as they escaped the scene in their victim’s car.
The sources added that the robbers were about seven in number and heavily armed.
“The victim made withdrawal and as soon as he came out of the bank, the robbers blocked and seized the cash and car keys from him.
“The policemen on duty at the bank premises did not intervene, but instead, they ran inside, apparently to safeguard the bank. The robbers drove out without any resistance, firing into the air,” our source said.
Metro gathered that the sound of gunshots caused a stampede in the area, as people scampered for safety.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebere Amarizu said his office was yet to receive any report of such about the incident.
Amaraizu said he would make more inquiries and get back to Metro, but no information was received from him as at the time of this report.
