SUSPECTED armed robbers have killed an aged couple in Ilorin, Kwara State, and dumped their bodies inside a well.
Saturday Tribune gathered that the suspects made away with the belongings of the couple during a night raid on their residence in the Fate area of the metropolis, on Wednesday.
The male victim, whose identity could not be established as of the time of this report, was said to be a pensioner.
It was gathered that the victims were carried out of their living room after being shot by their assailants and then dumped inside a nearby well.
Their bodies were said to have been discovered by neighbours who followed a blood trail to the well.
Speaking on the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, saying investigation had commenced to arrest the perpetrators.
“It is true. We still don’t know who did it and whether they were armed robbers or assassins, because it was a man that came to the police to report that they had an aged couple living within the premises but they could not find them after seeing blood on the floor of their section of the house.
“The police came and after searching the area, the corpses were found inside the well. So, we called the fire service department and they came to recover the corpses which have been deposited at the mortuary at UITH [University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital].
“We don’t know whether they were robbers or assassins but they went away with a Toyota Camry belonging to the couple. We are still investigating the incident but we would like to assure the public that the criminals will not escape the long arm of the law”, he said.
Speaking on security preparations for the yuletide, Okasanmi said the command had taken measures to ensure a hitch-free celebration.
“We will deploy plain-cloth policemen and intelligence officers across the state and we are working with the other security agencies and community leaders just as we did during the Islamic festival. We want to repeat our warning against alcoholism and the use of ‘bangers’ and we reiterate that we will deal severely with anyone caught violating the law on the use of these items, which is still active”, he said.
