Rivers emergency rule: Pro-democracy group expresses concern over national assembly’s endorsement

The Coalition of Democrats in Africa (CoDA) has expressed deep concern over the National Assembly’s approval of President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, warning that it sets a critical precedent for governance in Nigeria.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the group, through its president, Ambassador Ibrahim Mustapha, emphasized the need for democratic institutions to maintain their independence and uphold constitutional principles.

CoDA noted that the suspension of a democratically elected governor, deputy governor, and state House of Assembly raises fundamental questions about due process and the balance of power in a democratic system. The group urged the National Assembly to ensure that its actions align with the principles of constitutional governance and the protection of democratic institutions.

“The role of the legislature in a democracy is to serve as a check on the executive, ensuring that decisions taken are in the best interest of the nation and its people. It is essential that such decisions are guided by the rule of law and due process,” the statement read.

CoDA emphasized that the handling of security challenges across various regions should be approached with consistency and fairness, ensuring that constitutional procedures are followed in all cases. The group called for dialogue and legal frameworks to be prioritized in resolving political crises to prevent any action that could undermine democratic governance.

“We believe that constructive engagement, adherence to legal provisions, and respect for democratic institutions are vital to strengthening our democracy. It is important that all stakeholders, including the legislature, continue to play their roles in safeguarding constitutional governance,” the statement added.

The coalition urged Nigerians and the international community to remain engaged in discussions about democratic practices and constitutional order, advocating for decisions that promote stability and good governance.

“We encourage all parties to reflect on the long-term implications of their decisions and work towards a system that reinforces public trust in governance. History will remember those who upheld democratic values during challenging times,” CoDA concluded.
