Rider in court over alleged motorcycle theft

A rider, John Emmanuel, 26, who allegedly stole a motorcycle given to him on hire purchase, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge.

Emmanuel, who resides at No. 22, Pachukwu St., Aga-Ikorodu, Lagos, was charged with stealing and breach of the peace, but he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Dada Oluwaseun told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 2, at No. 16, Afolayan St., Agbede Ikorodu, Lagos.

Oluwaseun alleged that the accused stole the motorcycle with registration number SMK 334 QL from one Mr Sherif Adewale.

“The complainant gave the defendant the motorcycle on hire purchase for N250, 000, with an agreement that he would be remitting N2,000  daily.

“He sold the motorcycle for N145,000 without the consent of the complainant, and also forged the documents of the motorcycle.

“The complainant reported the case at the police, and the defendant was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that stealing contravenes Sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The section prescribes three years’ imprisonment for the offence.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Dosunmu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until April 3.
