Richard Ayodele Akintunde: A multifaceted professional with commitment to law, sports, and community service

Life unfolds in phases, and some individuals navigate these stages with a versatility that defines their identity. Richard Ayodele Akintunde, SAN, exemplifies this adaptability, embodying multiple roles across law, sports, and community leadership.

Born in the early 1960s in Montreal, Canada, to Nigerian parents Josiah and Florence Olanipekun, Akintunde’s early education began in 1967 at the Staff School, University of Ife. He later attended Ilesa Grammar School in Osun State from 1975 to 1980. His passion for law led him to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he studied for five years. Akintunde is married to Abegbe Oluwatoyin Akintunde, and they have a son.

Akintunde is a seasoned lawyer with extensive experience in civil, criminal, and commercial litigation. He has represented clients in various Nigerian courts, including the Court of Appeal, High Court, and Supreme Court of Nigeria. Beyond his legal practice, Akintunde is an advocate for social and health issues, often sharing his insights through media platforms. In 2020, he called on the government to address the conduct of security agencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership was further demonstrated in 2022 when he served as the electoral chairman for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), overseeing a fair and transparent election process and introducing reforms to electronic voting.

In addition to his legal career, Akintunde is an avid golfer and motorcyclist. His motorcycling journey, which began in 2018, has taken him across various countries and terrains, earning him recognition in the motorcycling community. He has participated in several tours, including the “Tough Tour” and “Iron Bum Run” series, receiving awards and certifications from reputable organizations. Akintunde is also a skilled golfer, having competed in numerous tournaments, including the 20th Anniversary NBA Section on Business Law Charity Golf Tournament, where he was the Runner-Up, and the 2024 NBA AGC Golf Tournament in Lagos, where he emerged as the Champion.

Akintunde’s connection to his roots is evident in his community involvement in Ondo, his hometown. Despite being born abroad, he has embraced his heritage and has been honored with the traditional title of Bamofin of Ondo Kingdom. In 2022, he was appointed Chairman of the newly launched Osemawe Youth Empowerment Foundation during a community event at the king’s palace.
