The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar-led National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, has advised President Bola Tinubu to address the high cost of living by reducing the prices of petroleum products, electricity tariffs, and agricultural inputs.
Rising from its Quarterly Executive Committee meeting in Abuja, it said in a communiqué signed by His Royal Highness, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, and Etsu Nupe, who is Chairman, Coordinating Committee, that it acknowledged the high levels of unemployment and economic difficulties and highlighted the need for proper implementation of youth empowerment programmes.
The council urged governments at all levels to focus on poverty alleviation, infrastructure development, employment generation, and combating corruption.
Even though the meeting was held on Monday, the communiqué was made available to the media on Friday.
The council expressed gratitude to the federal government for implementing palliative measures, introducing a student loan scheme, and approving a ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
On the planned protest against economic hardship, the council criticised the idea, warning that it could disrupt economic activities, disturb peace, and lead to the loss of lives and property.
The monarchs, therefore, encouraged dialogue as a solution to the impasse.
The body of traditional rulers emphasised the crucial role of traditional leaders in nation-building, calling on all Nigerians to recommit to building a stable, strong, and purposeful nation.
The council resolved to maintain frequent consultations among traditional leaders to exchange ideas and address nation-building issues, promoting community security, mutual understanding, and national integration.
It recommended utilising traditional institutions, religious bodies, strong NGOs, and trade unions for the implementation of government policies and programmes.
The traditional rulers supported the government’s establishment of Price Control and Commodity Boards to manage food and commodity prices effectively.
On security, the council called for increased manpower and equipment for the military, police, and other paramilitary agencies to enhance national security.
It urged relevant government agencies to tackle cybercrimes, human trafficking, and other fraudulent activities decisively.
The council advocated for creating an enabling environment for dialogue, especially with youths, through community engagement.
It also encouraged National Youth Service Corps members and other youth groups to engage in agricultural activities to boost food production.
The Council is co-chaired by the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
