Retired senior police officers protest poor remuneration in Edo

For hours on Tuesday, activities at the at the Edo State Police Command Headquarters, Benin City, came to a complete halt as retired senior police officers trooped out in protest against their poor remuneration.

Besides, the retired senior police officers also called on the police authority to remove them from the police contributing pension scheme to the old scheme benefit of the police force.

The protesters stressed they deserved better treatment than what they are getting at the moment, after giving their productive years to the service of Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the protesting senior citizens, Chairman of the Edo State Police Senior Officers Retirees, Anthony Nnachor, who said he retired as a Superintendent of Police (SP), said that police retirees remained the least paid among all the security agencies in Nigeria.

Nnachor lamented that whereas the police is the lead security agency in Nigeria, their welfare had not been properly catered for.

The retired senior police officer alleged that their promotion allowance for 2017 and resettlement allowances had not been paid till date, a situation he described as the “highest form of injustice and inhuman treatment”.

He therefore appealed to the Federal Government to review the police scheme and return their pension scheme to the police-defined benefit of the old.

Responding to the protesters, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Edo State command, Mr. Miller Dantawaye, said the current serving police men shared from the pains of the protesting retirees, and maintained that the commissioner of Police, Philip Ogbadu, would channel their grievances to the police force headquarters, Abuja.
