Resist godfatherism in Rivers, PANDEF Chairman urges Fubara

As the ongoing political war between incumbent Governor Amaopusenibo Sim Fubara, and his godfather, the immediate past Governor Nyesom Wike, former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.Gen. Kenneth Minimah (rtd), has sued for peace, warning that political godfatherism could jeopardize developments in the state, if not resisted.

The elder statesman, and Chairman, Rivers State chapter of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), who stated this while reacting to the unfolding crisis in a statement made available to Correspondents, commended Fubara for his resistance in a bid to rescue the state from the stranglehold of political godfatherism, towards the emergence of a new order.

He recalled that Rivers State has been in the news since after moves by 24 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach the sitting Governor Fubara resulted in turbulence in the state on Monday, October 30, 2023.

The governor’s loyalists stormed the House of Assembly complex in protest against the plot, which resulted to an embarrassing drama showcasing the state as unstable and ungovernable.

The FCT Minister, Wike has been accused of stoking the crisis after alleged disagreement with Governor Fubara, but the Army chief, who served in office between January 2014 and July 2015, urged Governor Fubara, to “free himself from the shackles of Godfatherism and embrace the challenge of leadership, to lead Rivers State to the promised land.”
