Reps want urgent action to curb Kaduna killings

Published by

THE House of Representatives on Thursday restated the need to set up a military strike force in the Southern Kaduna senatorial district of Kaduna State as an interim measure to address the killings in the area.

The House also urged the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency and National Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials to the victims in Kigam, Kitakum, and Ungwan Magaji, Ungwan Rimi, Ungwan Makera and Kizipi villages in Chawai Chiefdom in Kauru local government area of Kaduna State.

It will be recalled that the House had on October 19 resolved that security measures should be put in place to address the insecurity facing Southern Kaduna.

The House in the fresh motion resolved to send its leadership to interface with President Muhammadu Buhari over reported killings in Southern Kaduna.

The meeting with the President the House noted would ensure that there is lasting solution to the recurrent crisis in the southern Kaduna area.

The resolution of the House followed a motion sponsored by Honourable Simon Arabo entitled “urgent need to investigate the killings of 43 people, injuries to some and burning of 65 Houses in Kigam and eight other villages in Kauru local government area of Kaduna State on November 13-14, 2016”.

The lawmaker while moving the motion said that, there was need to put a stop to the incessant killings in Southern Kaduna.

The lawmaker further alleged that, the attacks are usually carried out when soldiers who are deployed to protect the troubled community had left.

Most of the lawmakers that spoke on the issue urged that urgent actions should be taken to address the insecurity.

Honourable Zakari Mohammed, while contributing to the motion, called for the introduction of state policing, urged security agencies to wake up and carry out their responsibility.

On his part, Majority Leader of the House, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila said that similar killings are gradually cropping into states.

He then advised that “a state of emergency on security situation be declared in Southern Kaduna to end the killings that has lasted long.”

When the motion was put to vote by the Speaker, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, it was supported by majority of the lawmakers.
