Reps to hold plenary session in honour of late member, Onanuga

Published by

Indications emerged on Monday that the report of the joint House of Representatives Committees on Appropriations and Finance regarding the 2025 budget estimates will no longer be presented at plenary on Tuesday.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akin Rotimi, confirmed this during an exclusive chat with Nigerian Tribune.

However, he noted that upon resumption, the House will dedicate the session in honor of the late former Majority Deputy Whip, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, who passed away on January 15, 2025.

He said, “As is the tradition, there will be no business of the day, in honor of the late Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga.”

It should be recalled that all the Standing Committees from the Senate and House of Representatives had met with Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, as well as Heads of various Departments, Parastatals, Agencies, and other revenue-generating institutions to discuss the utilization of funds appropriated in the 2024 Appropriation Act and the defense of the 2025 budget.

It was also noted that the House had, on Friday, January 24, 2025, announced the postponement of its plenary resumption, which was previously scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the House Spokesman, the new date for resumption is now set for Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

“This development was communicated to Honourable Members through an internal memorandum issued by the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Esq., on the directive of the House Leadership.

“The postponement is necessary to allow Committees sufficient time to conclude ongoing budget engagements and defenses with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

“This measure ensures a thorough and comprehensive approach to legislative responsibilities,” Hon. Rotimi noted.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the report of the 2025 budget estimates may be delayed due to uncertainty over the final compilation of the report by the joint Senate and House Committees on Appropriations and Finance.
