The House of Representatives on Wednesday tasked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration with the urgent commencement of free cancer treatment across the country.
The resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Badau Yusuf, who sought the intervention of the House.
In his lead debate, Hon. Yusuf lamented the alarming increase in the number of cancer patients in Nigeria and emphasized the need for government intervention in its treatment.

He highlighted that the majority of patients are low-income earners who require government assistance for treatment.
He therefore called for the establishment of an enabling legal framework for free treatment of vulnerable groups across the country.
The House also urged the Federal Ministry of Finance to ensure adequate provision of funds for cancer treatment nationwide.
In ruling on the motion, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas directed the House Committee on Health Services to instruct all Federal Teaching Hospitals to facilitate the treatment.
Consequently, the House mandated its Committee on Health Services and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.
The motion was voted on, adopted, and referred to the House Committee on Health Services.
