THE House of Representatives on Tuesday resolved to invite minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole to explain the alarming situation of how Nigeria would depend on a laboratory in Dakar Senagal to analyse samples of monkey pox.

The House has then mandated the Committee on Health to investigate an outbreak of Monkey pox in the country and urged Federal Government and International Community to support the country.

The House resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Honourable Diri Douye, who expressed shock that the Minister was quoted as saying that monkey pox could not be confirmed in Nigeria until laboratory investigations by World Health Organisation, WHO referral laboratory in Dakar, Senegal.

According to him, “the disease has spread to other states in the region notably Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in spite of the concerted efforts of the Bayelsa state government”.

Speaking further, he said, ” 55 close contacts have been identified and are being monitored as of 7th October 2017 and whereas there is however no definite remedy to treat the disease, intensive supportive care helps patients to recover fully, while active surveillance and quick detection of cases helps to halt the spread”.
