Reps set to debate state police bill, Tuesday

The House of Representatives is expected to commence debate on the general principles of a bill seeking to establish a state police in Nigeria.

The private member bill which was sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Hon Benjamin Kalu and 14 others, has been gazetted for a second reading on Tuesday.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the 36 State Governors had penultimate week unanimously resolved to put necessary measures in place to commence the establishment of State Police as part of measures geared toward ending the hydra-dreaded security challenges ravaging the country.

The proposed bill seeks to alter the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended ).

Also at plenary, the House is expected to debate a motion on the ‘Urgent need to Investigate the closure and exodus of Multinational Companies in Nigeria.

In the same vein, the lawmakers are expected to debate a motion on the ‘Need to investigate the abandoned $37.8 million Phase 2 of the NNPC – NAOC Joint Venture Okpai Independence Power Plant Project’.

As scheduled on the Notice Paper for the week, the House will on Thursday conduct a valedictory session for the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ghali N’abba who died at age 65.

Recall that the House had passed a resolution to immortalize the late Speaker who served from 1999 to 2003, by naming the National Assembly Service Commission complex after him.
