Reps pass bill to empower FG to seize assets acquired through corruption

Ongoing efforts to curb corruption in the country gained a boost as the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, passed through Second Reading a bill that seeks to empower the Federal Government to seize and confiscate assets gotten through unlawful activities by corrupt public officers and other individuals.

The Executive Bill seeks to make comprehensive provisions for seizure, confiscation, forfeiture, and management of properties derived from unlawful activities,” was sponsored by the House Leader, Hon. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa.

The bill also seeks to strengthen the criminal confiscation procedure by ensuring that the total benefit from a person’s criminal activity is calculated and an equivalent amount, where recoverable, is confiscated on behalf of the Federal Government.

It also galvanizes collaborative efforts among the relevant government agencies to implement confiscation proceedings against a convicted person in tracing and forfeiting properties reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful through non-conviction based forfeiture activity proceedings.

The Bill was voted on, passed and referred to the committee on financial crimes for further legislative action.

Also at the plenary, the lawmakers passed through the second reading, a bill for an Act to amend the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria Act, 2011.

In the same vein, the bill which seeks to repeal the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology Act, Cap. N116, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and enact The Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology Bill to provide for full-time and part-time Courses of Instruction and Training for the general development of Transport and Logistics Sector of the Nigerian Economy for Junior, Middle, Senior Cadre, Managers, Technicians, Technologists, Artisans and for related matters, passed through Second Reading.

The proposed legislation were sponsored by Hon. Femi Fakeye, Hon Solomon Bulus Maren, and 20 others.
