The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, resolved to probe the whereabouts of the N500 million earmarked for the reconstruction of the Federal Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, where over 200 girls were abducted by the Boko Haram sect in 2014.
The missing money was part of the N1.6 billion budgeted by the Federal Government in 2015 for the ‘Safe School Initiative’ and approved by the National Assembly.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved by Honourable Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe entitled “Call for Investigation of the N500 million Budgeted Fund for Reconstruction of Girls Secondary School Chibok,” and unanimously supported by members
Moving the motion, Honourable Igbokwe stated that the Federal Government earmarked the sum of N500m for the reconstruction of the Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, and that the reconstruction work was kicked off by the former Minister of Finance, Mrs Ngozi Okonjo Iweala;
He pointed out that the governor of Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, in one of his recent visits to Chibok, alerted the world that the school had not been reconstructed, thus indicating that the approved funds had been diverted.
The lawmaker lamented that there had been no official clarification from the Ministry of Finance or Office of the Auditor General of the Federation over the status of the funds earmarked for the project since the governor raised the alarm.
All the members who contributed to the motion expressed concern over the development, saying it was a shameful development for such a huge amount of money to have developed wings.
The House, however, resolved that its committees on Public Accounts and Basic Education and Services carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter and report back to the House within four weeks for furthe legislative action.
It also resolved that government should carry out a total rehabilitation all schools damaged by the outlawed sect in the entire North-East zone
