Reps move to create Oke-Ogun, Ijebu, Ife-Ijesa states

The House of Representatives is set to deliberate on a range of critical legislative matters including a bill seeking to create three additional states: Oke-Ogun, Ijebu and Ife-Ijesa.

The private member bill sponsored by Hon. Oluwole Oke, seeks to alter relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

As outlined on Thursday’s Order Paper, the House is also expected to debate the general principles of key bills slated for Second Reading.

They are: The House will also conduct the Second Reading of several Bills, including: A bill seeking to establish Central Gaming Bill sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu and six others.

The bill seeks to repeal the National Lottery Acts and regulate all forms of online and remote gaming.

Also slated for Second Reading is a Bill seeking to establish Lower Courts in the Federal Capital Territory, detailing their jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters.

Another bill seeks to amend the National Agricultural Development Fund Act, 2022, aimed at enhancing agricultural financing.

In addition to these legislative, the House is to consider the Conference Committee report on a Bill to prohibit the exportation of Maize in large commercial quantities, which will be laid by the Chairman, House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson.

In the same vein, the House is expected to consider several motions, including: Rescission of Clause 14(2) of the South West Development Commission Bill to align it with federal policies sponsored by Hon. Francis Waive.

The lawmakers will also debate the motion seeking to investigate alleged fraudulent practices in Contractor payments by officials of the Ministry of Finance and the Accountant-General’s Office, sponsored by Hon. Paul Nnamchi, Majority Leader, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere and Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji.

Another motion seeks to scrutinize budgetary allocations to Research Institutes from 2010 to date to assess utilization and impact on national development, sponsored by Hon. Ganiyu Adele Ayuba.

– Call for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to Clear Outstanding Contract Debts, given reports of financial hardship among contractors (Rep. Pascal Agbodike).

Additionally, several Committee Meetings are scheduled, including sessions on Rules and Business, Public Petitions, and the North West Development Commission.
