Reps to investigate abandoned Phase V Lugbe/Airport Road

Published by

The House of Representatives is to investigate the abandoned of the earlier proposed Phase V Lugbe/Airport Road axis of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It has thus mandated its Committee on FCT to investigate the reasons for the abandonment of the proposed road project.

The House resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Honourable Segun Ogunwuyi on the subject matter.

While moving the motion, the lawmaker noted that the Federal Capital Development Authority, among other functions, controlled the infrastructural and physical expansion of the FCT, giving consideration to functionality and aesthetics.

He added that the pressure on Phases I-IV of the Federal Capital City (FCC) made the authority to re-plan and designate the entire land on Airport road and Lugbe axis into phase V of the Federal Capital City (FCC).

He maintained that the authority kick-started the process of harmonising the provisions in the plan to reflect the new design, but the coming into power of the new administration stalled the harmonisation process and there were no signs that it would resume soon.

He also expressed concern that the non-completion of the harmonisation process had prevented land owners from developing their lands, thereby defeating the purpose of their purchasing the lands as the government had barred them from carrying out works on the lands; a move that will defeat the government’s aim of addressing the over 18 million housing deficit in the country and also further compound the accommodation problems in Abuja.
