The House of Representatives on Tuesday underscored the urgent need for repositioning of Nigeria’s internal security architecture as part of ongoing efforts aimed at tackling the menace of insecurity ravaging the country.
Chairman House Committee on Police Affairs, Hon. Makki Abubakar Yalleman, stated this during the inauguration of the Committee in Abuja.
He observed that members of the Committee have been “empowered by our Constituents and entrusted by the Honourable Speaker with the important responsibility of overseeing key issues relating to policing and law enforcement at a pressing time, when there are a lot of security challenges facing many parts of our Nation which require urgent attention and solutions.
“Citizens increasingly look to their representatives and leaders for answers on strengthening law and order, protecting lives and property, and building confidence in our security institutions.
“I am confident that we can achieve meaningful progress through open-minded discussion and collaborative efforts.
“Today’s meeting will, therefore, focus on the familiarization of Members and the adoption of a work plan for the remaining days of the year 2023, and also to look at ways to propel the activities of this Committee through proposing good legislation and harmonious relationships amongst ourselves.
“It is pertinent to note that the ability of a Committee to stand the test of time is hinged on transparency, accountability, diligence, patience, and perseverance, to mention but a few.
“Over the coming months and years, our work will undoubtedly touch on many complex and sensitive matters. There may be times when members have differing opinions or priorities.
“However, if we preserve an atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect, fostering consensus over conflict, I believe this Committee can deliver significant results for the betterment of Nigerians.”
While pledging to provide fair and impartial facilitation of the Committee’s proceedings, Hon. Yalleman assured that all views will be heard with equal consideration. In addition, transparency and accountability will characterize our operations. Periodic reports on activities and recommendations will keep the Committee and the public informed.
“Let me remind you that the leadership of the Committee will dwell more on your wealth of experience, expertise, hardwork and dedication in order to discharge functions of the Committee by ensuring adequate funding for Agencies under our jurisdiction, providing useful legislation, carrying out performance Audit and other allied oversight functions geared towards efficient service delivery and repositioning the nation’s internal security architecture.
“Allow me to recognize again your dedication in accepting these public service roles. Stewardship of our national security portfolio is an immense responsibility requiring diligence, vision and sacrifice.
“However, if we focus on our shared goals rather than narrow interests, uphold the highest standards of conduct, and place the needs of Citizens above our personal interest, I know this Committee can achieve great things.”
