Rep condemns food importation

The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon Lasun Yussuff at the weekend said that it was not economically wise to spend trillions of naira on rice importation and other agricultural produce.

The Deputy Speaker also called on Nigerians  to give President Muhammadu Buhari the needed support  to bring the country out of its current economy crisis.

A statement from the Deputy Speaker’s, Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Wole Oladimeji disclosed that, Honourable Lasun spoke at the Ilobu Day Celebration held at the Saint Paul Ilobu, Osun State.

While calling on Nigerians to embrace agriculture, Honourable Lasun said that no nation in the world could develop with mono-economy, noting that, there was need to embark on agriculture so that we could adequately feed ourselves.

The statement quoted the Deputy Speaker as saying, “It is wrong spending several trillions of  naira on the importation of rice annually, whereas, we could produce some of these agricultural products and even export them in exchange for forex, the president is making frantic efforts on how to correct this”.

On the need for economy diversification, the Deputy Speaker said that, “It is only through diversification of the nation’s economy that situation can improve and the economy would bounce back.

“Buhari is trying his  best in fighting corruption which on  one hand crippled and grounded the economy of the nation and on  another hand working towards diversifying the economy so that there would not be over dependence on oil.

“Let us believe in him, let us trust, let us have patience and sacrifice so that things could get better for all of us in the  end. There is hope that things could get better so let us rally round him and give him the support”, he stated.

He assured his constituents that he would continue to use his office to attract development to the state, he also assured that work would soon commence on the reconstruction of Ojutu Bridge and rehabilitation of Osogbo- Ogbomoso federal road. ?
