Grammy Award-nominated Nigerian artiste, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has made history after his song, Calm Down remix featuring global star, Selena Gomez, became the first Afrobeats song to surpass one billion views on YouTube.
The song, which was released on 25 August 2022, peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped various music charts around the world.
Announcing the latest milestone achieved by the hit song, Mavin Records, in a post on X on Saturday, described the new landmark as a “culture-defining achievement.”
The post reads, “The official music video for ‘Calm Down’ by Rema & Selena Gomez has surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube, becoming the first Afrobeats song to reach this milestone. A culture-defining achievement, and one for the books! ❤️🔥🦇”
Apart from peaking at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, the song also led the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart for a record-setting 58 weeks.
The song received multiple awards, including the highly coveted ’Best Afrobeats’ award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
