Rehabilitating public schools in Oyo State

Published by

RECENTLY, the Oyo State government announced its intention to rehabilitate 100 public secondary schools across the state.

A breakdown of the schools that will benefit from the government gesture shows that 34 are in Ibadan, 33 are in Oke Ogun, 15 in Ogbomoso, 12 in Oyo and nine from Ibarapa.

Apart from provision of modern classrooms, four compartments of VIP toilets will also be constructed in each of the schools. .

The decision of the Oyo State government is highly commendable considering the sorry state of most public schools. The decadence of the structures was as a result of long time neglect by previous administrations in the State.

Now that the schools are about to wear new looks, thumbs up to the present administration for the project which will definitely boost the education sector.

It is an obvious fact that the rehabilitation work is a major way of putting schools in a vantage position to change the face of education in the pace setter state.

The decision of the government to upgrade facilities in public schools will  create an enabling learning environment for students and will also create a conducive environment for teachers to impart knowledge in a serene and habitable environment.

There is no doubt that this development will change the perception and belief of the general public about public schools which many have tagged “deathtraps” due to the dilapidated state of many of the structures.

With this development, many parents, who initially withdrew their wards from public schools to private schools due to poor state of infrastructure, will now have a change  of mind as the government efforts to transform education is now yielding positive results.

At this juncture, it’s essential to call on individuals, philanthropists, corporate organisations as well as professional associations to team up with the state government in its plans to transform the education sector in the state.
