The Head, Department of Mathematics, University of Ilorin, Prof. Raphael Babatunde, has identified regular Mathematical competitions among secondary school students as a good stimulant for good performance in the subject by students.
Babatunde made the assertion, on Wednesday, while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin.
He said that the earlier the exposure of students to the nitty-gritty of the subject at secondary schools level, the better for the understanding and assimilation of the subject.
The head of the department pointed out that Mathematics is a very simple subject contrary to the general notion.

Babatunde added that if all the technicalities involved are exposed to the students at the primary and secondary school levels, they would find the subject to be less stressful than others.
The Mathematician explained that this can only be achieved through regular competition among students, adding that competition at secondary school level stimulates students’ interest and understanding of the subject.
Babatunde, however, identified funding as a major challenge militating against researches in Nigerian Universities.
He said that accessing funds for researches have stringent conditions attached to it and advised the government to make the conditions less stringent to encourage more research efforts.
The don advised the government at all levels to invest heavily on researches so as to allow Nigerian researchers to compete favourably with their counterparts across the world.
