Stakeholders have criticized misconduct of officers at the Tiger Base Unit of the Imo State Police Command, Owerri.
They expressed concerns about the continued extortion and harassment of innocent citizens, especially the youths, on the roads, stating that such practices go against the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
They also called for a ban on the use of Keke buses by police officers for patrol, adding that if they should use it, it must be a marked one.
During the national SERVOCOM week organized by the Imo State Police Command, held at the Police Officers Mess, Owerri, the Chairman of Police Community Relations (PCRC), Imo State, Mr. Chima Chukwunyere condemned the reckless dressing of the police officers on duty and called for monitoring by the authorities.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring that individuals wearing the police uniform are credible, as people often mistake them for criminals.
Mr. Chukwunyere also criticized the use of unmarked vehicles by the police during their road duties.
Additionally, the Federal Commissioner of the Federal Complaints Commission, Mr. Mike Uzodimma, expressed disappointment that the police hotlines provided for reporting insecurity challenges were not functioning.
They both called on the Commissioner of Police to address the reported misconduct of the Tiger Base Unit.
Furthermore, the Chairman of the National Youth Alliance and President of Protect the Weak International, Mr. Chinoso Uba, urged regular checks on the Tiger Base Unit to prevent further harm to individuals in their custody.
While commending the Commissioner of Police Imo State and some police officers of the command for their display of seriousness and commitment to duties, Uba blamed the people for playing into the hands of the police.
In his opening opening speech, thr Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma said that the essence of the program is to enhance police-community relationships and to evaluate the quality of police service we have delivered over the past year.
The CP represented at the meeting by the DCP Serajo Fana Mohammed further said that the programme will foster cooperation, encourage crime reporting, and ultimately creates a safer environment for all citizens.
