Recession: YCE urges Buhari to apply palliative measures

Published by

Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently evolve palliative measures to cushion the harsh effects of economic recession being experienced by majority of Nigerians across the country.

The YCE gave the charge during a visit to one of its founding fathers and former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, at  Ilupeju, Lagos

The chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the group, Mr Francis Akinikawe, who led members on the visit, said the call became imperative as the economic down turn had worsened the poverty level among many Nigerians, who on daily basis, continued to lament its effects.

Akinikawe, however, suggested that the various measures adopted by the government to end  the recession should be harnessed to make  them effective.

Another member of the group,  Chief Aremu Akindele, who also spoke, expressed concern that youth unemployment was increasing,  adding hat a conducive environment should be created to encourage local and foreign investments.

Akindele, who was  the former chairman, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, charged South- West governors to embrace economic integration in order to unite and liberate their people from the shackles of poverty.

He contended that doing so, would enable Yoruba overcome the  incursion of armed herdsmen and any other attempts to trample on the right of people of the zone.

“A united Yoruba will overcome the  incursion of armed herdsmen and any other attempts to trample on the right of our people,” he said.
