On rebranding of women in Ekiti

Published by

Women all over the world are regarded as the salt of the nation. In Nigeria, women have a slogan, “No woman, no nation”. Taking cognizance of the suffering and other social impediments confronting them, particularly in Africa, one would be compelled to ask if they have  really been upgraded to the point where they could be regarded as the salt of the nation.

It is in this context that the governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, came up with a policy, namely that the state will start celebrating women from this year.

The governor quickly began the redress of oppression against women by appointing a woman, Mrs Funmilayo Ogun, as the Commissioner for Works. He also established the office of the Special Assistant on Widows’ Matters to interface with widows and address some of the challenges facing them at the home front.

This pointed to the fact that the governor was desirous of liberating Ekiti women from the pangs of oppression and neglect confronting them from time immemorial.

Most exhilarating about the steps being taken by the governor to launch Ekiti women to national and international stardom is the proposed Women’s Day  slated for Wednesday. The steps taken by Governor Fayose are novel in the history of this country and should be applauded by members of the society.

Ekiti women are naturally imbued with great potential, with of them parading intimidating credentials. Obviously, Governor Fayose has done his home work and come to the realisation that what Ekiti women needed is exposure and moral support for them to reach enviable heights. He  has promised to redouble his efforts by having regular interface with women groups to ensure that the dream to make women economically and politically viable is realizable.

The Equal Opportunities law, Child Rights and Gender-based Prohibition laws are few of these steps taken to address the plight of women in the state .
