Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has launched a food palliative distribution initiative targeting 250,000 beneficiaries across all 27 local government areas to alleviate the impact of last year’s devastating floods.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony on Wednesday, Governor Zulum stated that the initiative was designed to address the economic hardships faced by residents due to the flood disaster.
He specified that 100,000 individuals within Maiduguri metropolis and its environs would benefit, while over 150,000 others would receive aid across 25 local government councils.
“Our state is still recovering from the recent severe floods that affected Maiduguri, Jere, and other communities, leaving many families in distress,” Governor Zulum remarked. “I am deeply concerned about the suffering caused, especially to the most vulnerable, who have lost their homes and livelihoods.”
“This Ramadan food distribution program, aimed at supporting 250,000 of the most impoverished, will see 100,000 beneficiaries in Maiduguri and its environs, while 6,000 individuals in each of the remaining 26 local governments will receive assistance,” he added.

Governor Zulum announced a 90% reduction in the distribution of palliatives previously provided to victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.
He attributed this decision to the significant agricultural yields recorded across the state.
“Our resilience has reinforced our belief in agriculture as a vital tool for economic empowerment. The state government is therefore committed to fostering an environment conducive to agribusiness and other productive ventures for our youth and entrepreneurs,” he explained.
“We will continue to invest in agricultural inputs, infrastructure, and support programs to enhance the sector and drive sustainable economic growth.
“This approach will promote self-reliance and significantly reduce government expenditure on palliatives. Consequently, palliative distribution will be reduced by 90% to encourage self-sufficiency and long-term development,” he stated.
Governor Zulum also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, sister states, and private individuals for their support of Borno State.
“We commend the Federal Government, sister states, and generous individuals and organizations for their solidarity and commitment to our people’s well-being. Their support has been invaluable. We extend our sincere thanks to all who have assisted,” he said.
The event was attended by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan (Borno Central), Deputy Speaker Engr. Abdullahi Askira (representing the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly), House of Representatives member Engr. Bukar Talba, former Deputy Governor Usman Durkwa, and other government officials.
