May 27, 2017 marked the beginning of the Ramadan season; a period for Muslim faithful to refocus on spiritual growth, personal development and being relevant positive examples in society.
Styling for the Muslim lady has evolved from neutral colours for the entire ensemble, to working with brighter colours, while still presenting a decent outlook. Interestingly, the fashion world has come up with many ways for Muslim ladies to cover up, while still looking elegant. This is the season to invest in Turbans, Kaftans, cape dresses, pashminas, jackets and long skirts.
The daily fast shouldn’t be an excuse not to look just as beautiful as you can. Below are some tips to keep in mind:
Layer up
This season might just be the excuse you need to work with as many layers as you can. Pair bright and dark colours appropriately. You can also work with patterns, stripes and plain fabrics. For layers, you can also work with jackets, high-necked blouses and skirts, leggings, midi-skirts, cape dresses, among others.
Get creative with head covering
Switch between turbans, pashminas, hijabs and scarves and caps for covering for the head. With head covering, you can also work with as many colours as you can, moving on from the popular black, brown, grey and white. Get creative with what you use for the head. For instance, instead of using the full hijab, you could wear a turtle neck blouse with a blazer and use a turban for the head.
Prioritise comfort
As a result of the expectations of the season, it is very important that whatever outfit you wear you should be comfortable in it. Beyond the need to cover up, being uncomfortable might, probably, defeat the purpose of looking stylish. Don’t go overboard with the need to follow trends. Moderacy is key this fasting season.
Quality accessories, minimal makeup
Neck scarves, bracelets, bold necklaces, colourful belts, will work well during this season as they will serve the purpose of spicing up your look.
For makeup, avoid the temptation of looking washed out during the observation of fast. Here, minimal makeup will work just fine. Unless the event calls for loud makeup, keeping things simple is the way to go this Ramadan season.
