The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has stated its aim to target a 10 per cent decrease in road traffic injuries and deaths as part of its 2025 Corporate Strategy Goals.
This was made known by Cross River Sector Commander, CC Joseph Toby, during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River state council, on Tuesday.
Toby stated that the Corps plans to achieve this goal by implementing six key policy initiatives established by the Corps-Marshall, which include: improving operational strategies, training personnel to set realistic expectations, forming strategic partnerships, digitalizing operational processes, maintaining discipline, and ensuring staff welfare.
“The FRSC is tasked with ensuring the safety of Nigerian roads for all users. To fulfill this responsibility, the Corps is employing various strategies to ensure effective delivery and execution.
Toby highlighted that poor road usage is a primary cause of accidents, noting that human behavior is often responsible for crashes.
He explained, “Accidents don’t occur by chance; people make choices that lead to them.”
He further illustrated the dangers of excessive speeding, stating, “The speed limit is 100 km/h for vehicles, yet some drive at 140 or 150. What do you expect? You’re entering unfamiliar territory at night, disregarding road signs and signals.
“You ignore traffic lights, despite warnings from security personnel. When buying tires, you may choose cheaper options, leading to failures. So, who is truly to blame for these issues?”
He called for a collaborative relationship between the Corps and the NUJ, emphasizing the media’s role in sharing accurate information to combat misinformation.
He urged that the media must effectively communicate current road safety topics, such as the crackdown on fake and illegal number plates—which is a nationwide enforcement initiative—and promote the FRSC mobile app, which is essential for all road users, to enhance awareness and compliance.
