Ramadan: Customers groan as prices of poultry products skyrockets

AS Nigerian Muslims join others across the world to celebrate Ramadan, as usual, the prices of some food stuffs, skyrocketed, while some food stuffs maintained their old prices.

When Tribune Online visited Kubwa Village Market in Abuja, it gathered that prices of Chicken hiked while the prices of rice, beans, Garri did not increase.
Before the Ramadan celebration, the price of chicken (old layer) was between N1300 -N1500, but yesterday in the market, the same chicken was sold for N1800.
Furthermore, broiler which was initially sold between N1800 – N2000, was as at, yesterday in the market sold for N2500.
It was learnt that the prices of rice and beans didn’t increase basically because the demand was not high. Before now, people had already bought rice and beans, store them in their homes because the products are not perishable.
During interaction with some customers, Tribune Online learnt that the customers were not happy with the hike in prices of food items, considering the current economic hardship.
One of the customers, Bukar Ibrahim said though he expected the prices of food stuffs increase, but the margin between the old price and the new one was very high.
Another customer, Aisha Zainab called on the government to look for possible ways to ease the economic hardship on Nigerian, stressing that most people may not enjoy their celebration due to the high prices of food stuffs.
“If you look at the market now, most people are here to buy one or two things but at the same time they cannot buy because the prices are high. The government need to do something to normalize the economy so that the common man can afford food”.

According to her, “I bought this same chicken for N1900 last weekend, but to my greatest surprise, when I came this morning to buy chicken we will use on Sunday, I was told the price is now N2500, it is unimaginable”.
As at the time this report was filed, the prices of those products didn’t reduce, also it was learnt that today which Sunday, the prices will increase more. More people are trooping into the market to purchase food items before the prices hikes further.
