Ramadan: 5 ways to eat watermelon

Ramadan, a month of fasting, is a time for spiritual reflection and self-discipline for millions around the world.

As the sun sets, Muslims break their fast with iftar, the evening meal, which traditionally starts with dates and water.

Incorporating fruits like watermelon into your iftar can offer hydration and essential nutrients to replenish the body after a day of fasting.

Here are five refreshing ways to enjoy watermelon during Ramadan:

Fresh Chunks

This is the most common and simplest way to enjoy watermelon. Cut the watermelon into bite-sized chunks and eat them directly. You can use a knife or a melon baller to shape the pieces according to your preference. Optionally, you can sprinkle some salt, chilli powder, or mint leaves for added flavour.

Watermelon Salad

Create a refreshing salad by combining watermelon chunks with other fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and oranges. You can also add some feta cheese for a contrasting savoury flavour. Drizzle some balsamic vinegar or lime juice over the salad for an extra kick.

Watermelon Smoothie

Blend watermelon chunks with yoghurt or coconut water to create a delicious and hydrating smoothie. You can add other fruits, like bananas or strawberries, for additional flavour. Optionally, you can sweeten the smoothie with honey or agave syrup.

Grilled Watermelon

Surprise your taste buds by grilling watermelon slices. Lightly brush watermelon slices with olive oil and grill them for a few minutes on each side until grill marks form. Sprinkle some sea salt and a squeeze of lime juice for a unique combination of sweet, smoky, and tangy flavours.

Watermelon Salsa

Dice watermelon into small pieces and combine it with finely chopped onions, jalapeños, cilantro, and lime juice to make a refreshing salsa. This salsa pairs well with grilled fish or chicken, or you can enjoy it with tortilla chips as a snack.
