The Professional Statisticians Society of Nigeria (PSSN) held its 7th International Conference on Wednesday in Keffi local government area of Nasarawa State.
The conference was attended by 136 members from across the country. The theme of the conference was “The pathway towards sustainable credible electoral process in Nigeria”.
Speaking to reporters, Prof. Waheed Yahaya, President of PSSN, explained that the purpose of the conference was for the professional body to come together and contribute to the betterment of society as statisticians.
He emphasized the significance of the chosen theme, considering the concerns of Nigerians regarding the improvement of electoral processes in the country.
Yahaya stated, “We believe lack of the usage of appropriate data is one of the ways forward. So if we do it right by collecting necessary data and using it appropriately we will be better for it.”
He also commended the lead paper presenter, former governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for discussing various aspects of Nigeria’s electoral processes and providing suggestions for improvement, including the role of statisticians in enhancing the electoral process.
Highlighting the importance of data harmonization, Yahaya emphasized the need to link voter data to the National Identification Number to prevent multiple registrations and underage voting.
He stressed that statisticians, as experts in data management, can contribute significantly to improving the credibility and decision-making processes of elections by ensuring the collection and analysis of reliable data.
In his paper presentation titled “Towards free, fair and credible Elections,” Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola emphasized the centrality of statistics in ensuring a credible electoral process in Nigeria.
He advocated for strict adherence to electoral laws, proper compilation of the voters register, transparent logistics, counting of votes, and collation of results to uphold the integrity of elections.
Prof. Suleiman Bala-Mohammed, Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK), commended the PSSN for choosing the university as the venue for the international conference.
He expressed the significance of getting elections right to sustain and consolidate democracy in Nigeria. Bala-Mohammed also encouraged society to promote the study of statistics and generate interest among students from secondary school onwards, given its importance for Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
