Protest: ‘Stop this massacre’, NLC tells security operatives

Published by

The labour union has strongly condemned the excessive use of force by security personnel, particularly the police, against peaceful protesters during the EndHunger protest across the country.

Reports indicate that over 40 people have been killed in two days, with many more injured, the Nigerian Labour Congress president, Joe Ajaero did in a statement on Saturday.

The union criticized the police for their “thoughtless brutal precision” and called for accountability, citing instances where protesters were shot and killed despite posing no threat.

The Kaduna State police command was singled out for its particularly brutal response, where a protester was heard pleading with police not to shoot before being killed.

In contrast, the Edo State Police Command was praised for its professional handling of the protests, where the commissioner of police was seen interacting and calming the protesters.

The union demanded tha Police personnel responsible for the killings be held accountable and face disciplinary action; and also compensation be paid to the families of those killed and injured.

The labour also demanded that all arrested protesters be released immediately and unconditionally.

“The police refrain from using live ammunition in managing protests.”

The union also called on the government to negotiate with protest leaders in good faith to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
