Protest: Police parade 20 teenagers, five women, others for looting, destruction in Kano

Published by

The Nigeria Police, Kano State Command, on Friday, paraded 20 teenagers, and five married women among the 326 suspects for allegedly being involved in looting and destruction of public properties and shops in Kano metropolis.

The Police disclosed that the ages of the teenagers arrested for allegedly participating in the looting were between ten and fourteen.

The Police Public Relation  Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, while parading the suspects, said the police had also made recoveries of many Jerricans of 25 litres of groundnut oil, a large quantity of stationeries, foodstuffs, and other valuable properties from the suspects.

But the command spokesman when asked about how where the teenagers would be kept,he said they would not be kept together with other suspects

“You can see that they were separated from other suspects been paraded ” he said

However, the “suspects are currently cooling their feet at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and thereafter will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation. More arrests and recoveries are in progress.”

While reacting on news circulating on social media concerning images of suspects and exhibits involved in the destructions in the state, he refuted the reports stating that they were old pictures.

According to him, “The Command wishes to address and clarify the recent deliberate false and mischievous news circulating on social media platforms concerning the photos of suspects and exhibits involved in the destruction and looting of public and private properties under the guise of the planned #End Bad Governance Nationwide Protest.

He therefore described the misleading unverified social media reports that some of the images were posted sometimes in 2011, as false and baseless.

He then added that these despicable acts are calculated attempts by enemies of peace to tarnish the reputable image of the Nigeria Police.

“These images showing suspects and exhibits are linked to the current incidents resulting from the ongoing August, 2024 Nationwide Protest and have no relation with any incident in the year 2011.

“Interestingly, the same suspects in the alleged looting and vandalizing who were arrested and paraded by the Police Command on 01/08/2024 are here before the press today, 02/08/2024 for clarity,” Kiyawa explained.

The Kano Police spokesperson noted that the command has directed the Anti-Cyber Crime Unit to launch an investigation with a view to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the fake news.

“The CP further warns against the meddling of fake news and hate speeches which are capable of inciting violence and affecting the overall security situation in the State.”

The CP commended the Kano State Government for prompt intervention in imposing the 24-hour curfew and called on parents, guardians and the law-abiding people of the state who saw their wards with looted properties to voluntarily return to the nearest Police Station.
