Protest: Oluyole Estate stakeholders move to forestall violence

In a bid to forestall possible breakdown of law and order during the protest billed for Thursday, stakeholders in Oluyole Estate, in Ibadan South-West Local Government, on Wednesday held a meeting at the residence of Baale, Oluyole Estate, Chief Yemi Ogunyemi.

In attendance at the meeting are: Baale of Odo-Ona, Chief Mojeed Taajo, Chairman PCRC, Oluyole Estate, Prince Oloyede Aminu, representative of youths in Oluyole Estate and environs, representatives of commercial motorcycle riders as well as representatives of companies domiciled in Oluyole Estate.

The crux of the meeting was to work out modalities on how to ensure the protest does not turn violent or an avenue for looting.

Youth leaders from Oluyole Estate, Odo-Ona and Apata present at the meeting pledged their commitment to ensuring that there’s no trouble during and after the protest.

They noted that the protest will be well-coordinated such that anyone who goes beyond boundaries will be handed over to the Police. The youths, however, decried the absence of government representatives particularly lawmakers representing them in the State House of Assembly as well as the National Assembly.

Abimbola Tajudeen, representative of Okada riders who ply Oluyole Estate and environs, while speaking during the meeting said Okada riders have been warned not to allow themselves to be used for illegal activities during the protest.

He said arrangement has been concluded to handover anyone who go against the laid down rules will be apprehended and handed over to the Police.

Speaking with journalists, Baale, Oluyole Estate, Chief Yemi Ogunyemi, commended youths in Oluyole Estate for their conduct during the EndSars protest.

He stated that nothing barbaric happened within Oluyole Estate during the EndSars protest. He noted that Oluyole Estate plays host to numerous manufacturing companies and shopping malls.
Chief Ogunyemi, said:”We want to guide against what happened during the EndSars protest in some areas in Ibadan and some other parts of the country.

“Although, we did not witness any form of violence or destruction of property here at Oluyole Estate, but even at that, we must not be complacent and that is why we are gathered here today.

“The youths have assured us of comportment. If we are going to protest, we should do it peacefully, we should avoid getting involved in acts capable of disrupting the peace of the community and their entire state.”

Representative of Zartech, Prince Taiwo Oriowo, called on youth leaders to plead to their followers to avoid attacking security agents, rather, they should cooperate with them by giving information that will lead to the arrest of those who may want to disrupt the peace of the society under the guise of the protest.

The representative of the Police, advised that if the protest must hold, the protesters should get a venue so that it’ll be well-coordinated.

He stated that some people are joining the protest for three reasons: For the betterment of the society, an avenue to loot and for fun.
