Residents of Kolo Creek in the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have staged a protest against what they perceive as a plot by certain top government officials to relocate the headquarters of the Kolo Creek Rural Development Authority (RDA) to the Emeyal 2 community.
Kolo is the hometown of Mr. George Turnah, who has reportedly fallen out of favour with the state governor and shifted his political allegiance to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The Kolo Creek RDA is one of the 36 Local Government Areas established by the former governor, the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, in 2000.
According to the protesters, the decision to marginalize the Kolo community due to political reasons is unjust.
They are concerned that attempts to approach the National Assembly to create an LGA named Ogbia North from the existing Kolo RDA—proposing Emeyal 2 as the headquarters instead of Kolo, the headquarters of Ogbia Constituency 3—will only lead to further conflict.
Chief Solomon Ederi Aginaye, the King of Kolo Kingdom, stated that the protests reflect the community’s grievances over this effort to undermine them. He emphasized that the interests of the Kolo community have not been considered by those pushing for the headquarters’ relocation.
Chief Aginaye has urged the governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, to resist the pressure from certain politicians and prioritize the needs of the community and the state.
“The people are calling on President Bola Tinubu, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, the House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas and Wike to stop the sinister move against the peace-loving people of Kolo.
“We appeal that they reinstate Kolo as the headquarters of Kolo Creek RDA as a full-fledged local government area which has now been renamed Ogbia North Local Government Area in the proposal submitted to the National Assembly’’.
